Hi there!
I’m reaching out, because I have an intimate relationship with the XGames and extreme sports.
My ask: I’m interested in collaborating with Burton during XGames on a story, specifically about a 30 year return to shoot the events. I’ve worked around the clock to make photography my full-time gig, after growing up down the street from the original games in Rhode Island.
Mainly taking photos with my Sony a7R4, I’m interested in storytelling from an artistic perspective that involves photos, video, and audio (podcasts).
I shoot on my phone, a GoPro, the RayBan Meta glasses, and a drone besides my main Sony. Candid, event photography is my expertise (there are several pages on my website supporting my efforts and skillset).
My first time shooting the games was in 1996 in Providence, Rhode Island with my aunt - Connie Rogers. Without her taking me to the games and handing me her camera - I wouldn’t be the photographer or storyteller I am today.
Her influence as a teacher has ripped throughout my adulthood and I’m so thankful for her continued support. Losing my mother in 2009, Connie has always been a source of encouragement and positivity.
At 10 and 11, I was already in-line skating and skateboarding around the neighborhood and gaining interest in the larger, rapidly growing street scene. I grew up in Pawtucket, Rhode Island - a short 10 minute drive to Providence where some of the skateboarding, street louge, and half pipe competitions were taking place.
The photos you see here were captured by myself and my aunt during the games. Before the internet boom, cellphones, and social media - I got see some of the best extreme athletes in the world Up close and personal.
Both of my parents took photos and my father recorded dozens and dozens of 8 mm tapes throughout the years, covering family functions and rights of passage. Privileged in so many ways, but none more so in the support my family has shown me over the years.
I miss my parents dearly - focusing a lot of my efforts on men’s mental health and conversations regarding grief.
Snowboarding is the best thing I do for my mental health.
At 39 years old, I live in Denver Colorado specifically so I can ride on a regular basis throughout the winter and spring. I’ve volunteered my time with programs like Riding on Insulin, Camping to Connect, and Slide Thru Sessions helping young people learn how to snowboard.
Living with type one diabetes for the last 23 years means that I require hefty medical insurance to pay for my needs. The last year of contract work and uncertainty has been incredibly difficult and I’m doing everything I can to find full-time work. I’m hoping a company will see my value throughout my games coverage and hire me.
I would be interested in shooting the Games and capturing the story from the eyes of a young man following his dream to work in the most electric and exciting part of the sports industry.
I’m available any day for a conversation regarding next steps if you feel this story could be a good fit.
Thanks,
Matt Tarro
